How Do I Get My Students to Speak?

Welcome to our blog everyone…… This time, we are going to discuss about an interesting topic about learning activity in speaking. Let’s just call this article How Do I Get My Students to Speak? Which is actually a presentation by Megan Lennon in Totally Terrific Tips for Teaching (T4) at an International English Workshop held by Lbpp-Lia Candi, at Grasia Hotel, on Feb 29 2012.

So we would like to share to you what was the presentation like by simply discussing the activity for speaking, which is by doing games. But first, here is further explanation, why games and activities are chosen.

a. First, it will make students active, by doing games in the class, teacher encourages his students to move, mingle with friends, share knowledge and socialize. When the students do all of that, they will be more active and active students are happy students. Else, they will learn maximally in this kind of state.

b. Often times, teacher caught students red handed when they play with their cell phone during the class. That’s why; doing games is an essential way to avoid that. By the time students participate in the games, they are concentrating on the activities and they will not do something else.

c. Game is actually an act of repetition or in other words, it’s a kind of drills. By using repetition, it will help students remember and study the material in a fun way.

There will be three parts of games we can use in particular section of learning. The first is games for icebreaker, second is games for learning new material and the last is games for introducing new vocabulary.

1. games for icebreakers

  • 20 questions

Teacher keeps one word in mind and gives chance for students to ask questions to be able to guess the word. Students should keep on asking until they get the word. It doesn’t have to be in 20 questions, it can be more.

  • Think pair and share

T plays music while S walking, T say a particular topic to be discussed. When the music stop, S find their partner by reaching eye contact with the friends standing close to them, then doing high five and talk about the topic.

2. Games for learning new material

  • Action verb circle

T and S make circle & say sentences (focused on verbs) then practice it in turns. The last S says all the sentences.

  • Magic verb spell

(Harry Potter vs Voldemort)
One S as Harry, one S as Voldemort. The other S as players. Voldemort spell charm to S “you are dancing” and the player do it. The player will stop when Harry comes and ask “what are you doing?” player should answer “I am dancing” to break the spell.

3. Games for introducing new vocabulary.

  • Taboo vocabulary games

One S sit in chair and some S stand surrounding him, giving clues for S who sit to be able to guess the target words

  • Vocab circle chains

Use cue cards to get students recognize new vocabs by pairing up the questions and answer.

Alright everyone, I guess that is my simple description about some activities used in speaking. I do hope that it will be useful for you, thank you very much and best regards, byeee………..

High Intermediate 1: The Road to Winning The Contest

One day, Ms Nana came to class and announced that there was a wall bulletin competition. At first, we felt so lazy, the topic was “ Our hope for our beloved LIA Tendean in the future. The committee gave us 5 days to finish the wall bulletin.
We were confused to match our schedule to make the wall bulletin. Finally, we agreed to make the wall bulletin on Friday at DP Mall. Out of 9 people, only 6 people could come. So, we decided to divide ourselves into two groups, the group who would design the wall bulletin and the group who would do the presentation. Dede, Nia, Ubi, Dita, Uchi, and Fadhia belonged to group 1, and Hadian, Retma, and Rifka belonged to group 2.
On March 2, 2012, group 1 gathered at DP Mall to make the concept for the wall bulletin. The concept was that we divided our hopes into 4 parts, they are:
1. Building
Our hopes for LIA Tendean’s building in the future. We hoped that LIA Tendean would always upgrade the facilities and the interface of the building, as expensive as the course fee.
2. Teachers
LIA Tendean’s teachers must be interactive, kind, young, energetic, and also attractive. They also must give us knowledge beyond the lessons and motivate the students to speak English well.
3. Students
We hoped that LIA Tendean gave a big discount for the students, so more students could come and join and make LIA Tendean as crowded as that in the past.
4. Trophy
We hoped that, in the future, LIA would hold a lot of students’ competitions that could make students speak English fluently, and LIA Tendean would award the best student, the best teacher, and the best class annually.

We’ve already got the concept of our wall bulletin. Next Tuesday, we would make the design and brief the presentation group about our concept.
On March 6, 2012, we brought the equipment to make a wall bulletin and everything was ready. So, we began to make it. We gave a home for our bulletin, it was BOHAI or BULLETIN OF HI ONE. It needed two hours to design and decorate the wall bulletin, while group 2 studied the presentation materials.
At 7:10 pm, the bulletin was ready to be presented. Ms. Verra came to our class to videotape our presentation. After the presentation was over, Ms. Verra said that it was the longest presentation of all the classes xD.
On March 13, 2012, Ms. Nana said that the wall bulletin’s winners would be announced at 6:30 pm. We were very nervous as we saw that the other wall bulletins were all great. Then we were called to join other classes in R.207. It was so crowded. First, all classes were given tokens of appreciation as the symbols of our participation. They were key chains with LIA logo on them. After that, Ms. Verra started to announce the winner. She had announced that the second winner was Intermediate 3 students from Monday-Wednesday class. Then, she announced the third winner, which was gotten by HI 2 students. We felt hopeless at that time, because we thought that HI 2’s wall bulletin was better than ours. But then, Ms. Verra announced that the first place was ours! We were so surprised, happy, and excited at the same time. After we took the prize, we took pictures, and finally, we went back to our class and of course, we had a big party! xDD

Announcing The Winners

All competition must have winners.

To choose three winners are not easy as pie. There are three judges involved in this contest, and we decide that Mr. Taufiq, Ms. Mima, and Ms. Arum are suitable for this honored position.

The scores themselves are gotten from three categories, they judge a piece of wall bulletin from its design, content, and presentation. The score itself ranges from 1-5 ( refers to LIA's scoring system ). After counting the average scores of all participants, we got the winners! Yet, there are complicated ways to announce the winners. We have to gather classes in every slot and announce it. And....The winners are......*drums*
  • High Intermediate 1 got the First Place
  • Intermediate 3 got the Second Place
  • High Intermediate 2 got the Third Place

Our job is done, winners have been announced and prizes have been distributed, but what about the losers?

Ooops!

They aren't losers, they just aren't the winners :-) How come we call all participants who have sacrificed lots of things as losers? Once again, they aren't losers, they just aren't winners xD

So long, folks! Thanks a million for your participation, we'll see you again in the next competition. :-))

All Results Originate From Their Process

There are a lot of stories to be told on the previous Wall Bulletin contest. Yes, they are the stories behind the creation. Some classes have great resources, like great number of students, great planning, and of course, great fund, since they have to buy the equipment needed to make the wall bulletin. Most of them have sacrificed their time to arrive home on time because, it seems that one session, equals to two hours, is not enough for them. Some of them have to stay ten minutes or even two hours after the course time has been over. Thank God they don't mind, and to my surprise, they enjoy being in that situation. They wouldn't have done it if they hadn't loved LIA Tendean. Our greatest sincere appreciation goes to and only for them, our beloved students. Here I'm gonna show you their pictures when they're in the process of completing their masterpiece.

Check them out:

Oh! Almost forgot! Their class teachers also play very important role to their work. Once again, mucho mucho gracias for the cooperation, folks! LIA Tendean is nothing without all of you, guys! xD

A very hard yet Fun work, Indeed :-)

Finally, It's a wrap!

After a full week marathon of supervising the wall Bulletin contest, finally it's over. Witnessing our students' enthusiasm is one of the precious moments that I've ever experienced. You can imagine, we only gave them a very short time between the announcement to join the contest and the time to execute their ideas into wall bulletins. Yet, the result is very surprising and amazing. Our students have shown their biggest loyalty and especially their Love towards LIA Tendean, one of the prominent English courses in Semarang. In order to show our high appreciation towards their hard works, we, the committee, represented by me, MsVe, has decided to display their works along the hall, from the entrance door to the back. Here is the display:

Don't look at the floor..;-p

In order that I could display all the wall bulletins, I personally asked our friendly helpful janitor, Mas Budi ( helped by Pak Kusnanto ) to attach them on our wall of fame, and  took his picture with his masterpiece..hehe..

Mas Budi in action xD

Thank you for your great help, Mas Budi! xD

To give you a closer look of the wall bulletins created by LIA Tendean's students, I will attach their work. Here they are:
